The poorest people, who were slowly chased out of Newark by the rampant fires, moved to Irvington, East Orange, and other nearby towns, overcoming racial barriers by their sheer numbers. The weight of problems the displaced people brought with them crushed those surrounding cities. In the words of Monsignor Linder, “Irvington is now African American. Irvington is worse than Newark, or equal to Newark. East Orange is African American. Years ago, they won that National Beautification or whatever award they give for beautiful cities; they wouldn’t get it now. I think Orange has been impacted. South Orange—and everybody said South Orange is never going to change—has changed significantly. You begin to see more and more people in South Orange selling and moving out to the Chathams and the Summits. So basically where we had a low-income population concentrated, we now have it spread out. And we have just destroyed maybe four cities. I think you can go as far as Short Hills, and you feel the impact on real estate.”
